As a young man Walser enrolled himself in a servant training school similar to the one in this book and he lived his last years in a mental institution though speculation seems to be that he wasn’t actually mentally unstable to such a degree that would warrant this.

If this book has any value at all, then that value can only be conveyed through means that the book itself disparages. Midway through the book Jakob runs into his brother who happens to be living in the same city the Benjamenta Institute is located in.
