The commission headed by Justice Bakhtawar Lentin conducted one of the most publicised and thorough hospital investigations in history. Yet the Government has ignored its findings and reinstated Dr R. Chandrikapure, who was dean of the government-run J.
Hospital in Bombay in Januarywhen at least commisslon patients died after being administered adulterated glycerine.
In his report, Lentin had observed of Chandrikapure: Obviously, the Government didn’t agree. The same Dr Chandrikapure is now dean of the famous Sassoon Hospital in Pune, after an inquiry conducted by the Department of Medical Education reportedly decided that depriving him of three increments was enough punishment for his role in the hospital deaths.
Two other doctors involved in the tragedy have also been reinstated – Dr A. Jamadagni, also at Sassoon Hospital, and Dr S.
Shaligram, back at J. And the only official the Government has punished with dismissal is L. Raykar, an assistant commissioner of the Food and Drug. Administration who had actually assisted the Lentin Commission. Raykar was dismissed on some unrelated charges concerning his leave travel allowance, even though his inquiry officer had only recommended the withholding lentib increments.

Worse, former health minister Baliram Hiray, against whom Lentin had passed strong strictures, was nominated as a member of the state Legislative Council. Raykar is now waiting for his petition to be heard by the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal. Nor have some of the recommendations regarding hospital administration been implemented.
